During an ultrasound scan, high-frequency sound waves are transmitted through the uterus, where they bounce off the developing baby. The returning echoes are then processed by a computer to create real-time images that show the baby’s position, movements, and basic structures. These scans are usually performed by trained sonographers, who may be physicians, midwives, or radiographers, most of whom hold postgraduate qualifications such as a Certificate, Diploma, or Master’s degree in Medical Ultrasound. Ultrasound dating is often more accurate than relying solely on the last menstrual period, as an early first-trimester scan can precisely determine the gestational age of the pregnancy. At this stage, because the fetus is still small, surrounding maternal structures such as the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes are also clearly visible, allowing early detection of potential complications. If the scan is conducted too early—before around 7 weeks of gestation—the fetus may not be developed enough to provide all necessary information, and the patient may be asked to return in one to two weeks. Early ultrasounds are particularly important if there are concerns such as abdominal pain, bleeding, or risk of ectopic pregnancy, ensuring accurate assessment and timely care.
